Sifnos itinerary for 5 or 7 days with a car

5 min read · 2026-11-03 · Artemis Rental

Three days shows you the highlights of Sifnos. Five lets you settle in. Seven is when the island starts to feel like yours: a favourite taverna, a favourite cove, a road you drive without thinking. These plans assume a car and a base in or near Apollonia, which puts every beach within about 10 to 35 minutes.

If you only have three days, start with our 3-day itinerary.

Before you start: let the wind choose the order

From mid-July through August the meltemi, a strong northerly wind, blows on many afternoons. North and east-facing coasts get choppy; Vathi, Kamares and the coves around Faros stay calmer. So treat the days below as building blocks, not a fixed sequence. Check the forecast each evening and swap days around. That flexibility is the whole point of having a car.

The 5-day plan

Day 1: Arrive at Kamares

Pick up your car at the quay as you step off the ferry; delivery to Kamares port is free. If your room is not ready, swim at Kamares beach, which is long, sandy and shallow. Drive up to Apollonia (about ten minutes), check in, park once for the evening and walk to dinner.

Day 2: The south loop

Morning swim at Faros, where three small coves sit within a few minutes' walk. Drive on to Chrysopigi: the monastery on its rock, swimming from the rocks below, and sandy Apokofto next door. Afternoon at Platys Gialos, the longest beach on the island, with tavernas behind the sand. Back to Apollonia for the evening.

Day 3: Vathi

Drive southwest to Vathi, a sheltered horseshoe bay with calm water even on windy days. Long swim, long lunch, pottery workshops in the village. If the wind is up, this is the day to move earlier in the week.

Day 4: Kastro and the inland villages

A slow morning in Artemonas for breakfast and a walk among the old mansions. Afternoon through the inland villages, Exampela, Katavati and the Petali villages, then Kastro for sunset. Park outside the medieval village and walk in. Stay for dinner after the day visitors leave.

Day 5: The north coast

On a calm day, drive north through Artemonas to Cherronisos, a small fishing village at the end of the road, about 35 minutes from Apollonia. Combine it with Vroulidia, a pebble beach with clear water; take the last stretch of road slowly. Fill up with fuel before you set off. Return the car at the port before your ferry, or keep it for one more swim at Kamares while you wait.

The 7-day plan

Days 1 to 5 as above, spread out with two extra days.

Day 6: Walk an old footpath

Sifnos has one of the best networks of waymarked stone paths in the Cyclades, many of them old routes between villages, chapels and the sea. Start early, carry water, and use the car to get to the trailhead. A favourite pattern: one of you walks a section down to the coast, the other drives round to meet them for a swim and lunch. Our hiking trails by car guide has trailheads and parking. In July and August, walk before 10 a.m.

Day 7: A slow day of food and pottery

Sifnos is known across Greece for its cooking. Look for revithada, chickpeas baked slowly in a clay pot, traditionally a Sunday dish, and mastelo, lamb or goat cooked in a clay vessel with wine. Book a long lunch, browse a pottery workshop in Kamares or Vathi, and save the evening for Apollonia. More in food and pottery.

On a seven-day stay, put the walking day early in the week while your legs are fresh, and keep the slow food day for the end.

Practical notes

  • Start early. In July and August, beaches near parking fill by late morning. Before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. is calmer.
  • Park once in the evening. Apollonia, Artemonas and Kastro are walking villages; leave the car at the edge.
  • Fuel. Petrol stations are few. Top up before the north-coast day.
  • Ferry days. Do not plan an island hop and a beach marathon on the same day. Sailings in summer can be delayed or cancelled by wind; see the ferries guide.
  • Combining islands? Milos is the classic pairing. Read Sifnos vs Milos.

The car for this trip

For two people a small manual is plenty; for a family, a Skoda Fabia, Citroën C3 or Peugeot 301 gives you room for beach gear. If you only drive automatics, book early for July and August. Our guide to which rental car suits Sifnos compares every model.

Free pickup at Kamares port, the heliport, Apollonia, Artemonas and Kastro, and no prepayment to reserve. Check the rates or send your dates.
