How to get to Sifnos from Athens, step by step

There is no airport on Sifnos. Every visitor arrives by sea, which means the journey is really two legs: get yourself to Piraeus, then get a boat. Neither leg is difficult, but the connection between them is where people lose time and occasionally miss a sailing. Here is the whole route, in order, with realistic timings.

The journey at a glance

Realistically, budget half a day from landing in Athens to putting your bag down on Sifnos, and a full day if you are coming from outside Europe.

Step 1: Fly into Athens

Athens International Airport (ATH) is the gateway. It has direct connections from most European capitals through the summer, and long-haul links year round via the usual hubs.

The single most important planning rule: do not book a flight that lands in the afternoon and a ferry that leaves the same afternoon. The transfer to Piraeus is roughly an hour, ferries do not wait, and a delayed flight turns into a missed sailing and an unplanned night in Athens. If your flight lands after about 2pm, plan to sleep in Athens or Piraeus and sail the next morning.

Step 2: Athens airport to Piraeus port

Piraeus is the port that serves Athens, southwest of the city. You have four options:

Metro (Line 3, blue). Direct from the airport to Piraeus station without changing, roughly an hour. It is the cheapest option and reliable, though it can be uncomfortable with large luggage in summer heat. The station sits at the port's edge, but Piraeus is enormous and you may still have a long walk to your gate.

Express bus X96. Runs 24 hours between the airport and Piraeus, taking around 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. It stops at several points along the port, which can put you closer to your gate than the metro does. Useful for very early or very late sailings.

Taxi. A flat fare applies between the airport and central Athens, with a separate rate to Piraeus. Around 45 to 60 minutes outside rush hour, longer in it. Worth it with heavy bags or a tight connection, and the driver can drop you at the correct gate.

Private transfer. Pre-booked, most expensive, no queue, and the only option that guarantees a specific gate drop-off. Sensible for families with a lot of luggage.

A warning about Piraeus

Piraeus is not one dock, it is a working port stretching several kilometres with numbered gates (E1 to E12 and beyond). Different companies and destinations depart from very different points, and the walk between gates can take twenty minutes. Check your gate number on your ticket before you arrive and allow time. This catches out first-time visitors more than anything else on the trip.

Step 3: The ferry to Kamares

Every ferry to Sifnos docks at Kamares on the west coast. Two vessel types run the route: high-speed catamarans at roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, and conventional ferries at about 5 hours with stops at Kythnos and Serifos.

Sailings run daily through summer, thinning to three or four a week from November to March. In July and August, book well ahead, particularly around the 15 August public holiday.

The Milos airport alternative

Milos, the neighbouring island to the south, has a small domestic airport with flights from Athens. You can fly Athens to Milos and take the short ferry hop north to Sifnos.

Honestly, this is rarely worth it. The flights are small, infrequent and often expensive, you still need a ferry at the end, and the Milos to Sifnos connection does not run every day. It makes sense mainly if you were already planning to visit Milos, in which case flying in and ferrying out is an elegant routing.

Helicopter

Sifnos has a heliport, and charter helicopter transfers from Athens do operate. It is a genuine option for those who want it, taking well under an hour. We deliver rental cars to the heliport free of charge, same as the port.

Getting from Kamares to your accommodation

You have landed, sailed, and are standing on the quay at Kamares. Apollonia, the island capital, is about 5.5 km inland and uphill, roughly ten minutes by car. The beach villages are 15 to 25 minutes away.

Your options are a bus, which meets most ferries but follows its own schedule and fills quickly, a taxi, of which the island has only a handful and which vanish within minutes of a full August ferry docking, or your own vehicle.

This is the gap that catches people out. We close it by meeting the boat. Send us your arrival date and approximate docking time, and your car will be waiting at Kamares port at no extra charge. There is no prepayment and no card details taken to reserve. Third-party insurance, maintenance and local help are already in the daily rate, and we have been doing this from the same Apollonia office since 1988.

Planning your return

Apply the same rule in reverse, and more strictly. Never book your return ferry for the same day as an international flight home. Summer wind can cancel high-speed sailings at short notice, and the replacement seats fill immediately. Leave a night in Athens as a buffer. It is the cheapest travel insurance you will ever buy.
