Getting around Sifnos: car vs scooter

Getting around Sifnos: car vs scooter

For most visitors staying three-plus nights, a car is the most comfortable way to reach beaches and villages. Scooters suit confident riders with light luggage. Buses exist in summer but are infrequent for beach-hopping; taxis are limited in peaks.

Car rental on Sifnos

Compact cars fit village lanes and tight parking best. Artemis maintains cars for island roads, request dates early for July–August automatics. Pickup is typically Apollonia; cars may also meet ferries at Kamares on request. Scooters are Apollonia-based.

Scooter rental

Great for experienced riders who want wind-in-the-face freedom between Apollonia, Faros, Chrysopigi and Vathi. Wear the helmet, mind gravel, and avoid overloading. If you are new to island hills or travelling with kids/lots of bags, choose a car.

Buses & taxis

Summer buses link Apollonia with Kamares, Platis Gialos, Vathi, Faros and other villages, useful, but not ideal if you want three coves in one day. Taxis exist; do not rely on hailing one at a remote beach at 19:00 in peak season.

Road character

  • Asphalt covers the main Apollonia–beach spines.
  • Some north / cove approaches include rough or steep finales, go slow.
  • Blind corners and narrow village streets: horn gently, mirrors in.
  • Night driving: watch for unlit edges and scooters.

Parking cheat-sheet

  • Apollonia evening: park once, walk.
  • Platis Gialos: earlier = closer.
  • Chrysopigi: limited; never block monastery access.
  • Kastro: park below / outside and walk the medieval lanes.
  • Herronisos: tight village lanes, patience.

Fuel & ranges

Fill in the Apollonia / main-road area before a full north-coast day in high season. Distances are short, but queues appear when several ferries land on the same afternoon.

Suggested daily radii from Apollonia

  • 0–15 min: Artemonas, Katavati, Kastro, Kamares
  • 15–25 min: Faros, Chrysopigi, Platis Gialos, Vathi
  • 30–40 min: Herronisos, Vroulidia
