Best Sifnos beaches to reach by car

4 min read · 2026-07-05 · Artemis Rental

Sifnos packs an unusual number of swimmable bays into a compact island. Buses exist, but a rental car or scooter from Artemis lets you chase light, morning calm at Vathi, afternoon shade at Faros, sunset drinks in Apollonia without watching the clock for the last bus uphill.

South coast: the classic loop

Start from Apollonia (Artemis default pickup) and descend to the south. Platis Gialos is the island's busiest sand strip: tavernas, sunbeds, and a large car park that fills by mid-morning in August. Arrive early, swim, then drive on before the lot tightens.

Chrissopigi sits below the famous monastery, park on the road above and walk down. The cove is smaller and photogenic; combine it with a late lunch at a Faros taverna fifteen minutes east.

Vathi feels like a lagoon at the island's western dip. The approach road is winding but paved; parking spreads along the bay. Families love the shallow entry; couples often stay for the whole afternoon.

Faros and Herronisos

These eastern coves trade Platis Gialos crowds for taverna tables near the water. Parking is informal but limited on summer evenings when locals arrive for fish. A compact car slips into spaces a minivan cannot.

West and north: quieter options

Apokofto and Fykiada reward drivers willing to walk the last few minutes from a roadside pull-off. Kamares itself is the port beach, handy on arrival day before you collect keys in Apollonia or if you arranged Kamares pickup on request.

Vroulidia on the north requires a longer drive and a short walk; fewer facilities, more solitude. Check wind direction, north coast beaches can chop up when meltemi blows.

Building a beach day with your rental

One sensible pattern: north-coast coffee in Kastro or Artemonas, south-coast swim before noon, siesta, then Apollonia dinner without repacking the hotel. Another: base near Kamares for port swims, drive inland only for Chrissopigi sunsets.

Scooters work for couples in May and September; families with cool boxes and child seats usually prefer a hatchback. Artemis offers both from the same Apollonia office, no prepayment to enquire, seasonal rates published on the rates page.

Parking and peak-season reality

August rewards habit: same arrival time daily, same corner of the Platis Gialos lot, walk to your preferred taverna. Do not block farm gates or village entrances, fines and tow risk exist even on sleepy islands.

If every south-coast lot looks full, try Faros or a second visit to Vathi after 4 p.m. when day-trip energy fades.

One-day beach circuit sample

Morning: drive Apollonia → Vathi (45 minutes including photo stops), swim and coffee. Midday: Platis Gialos lunch and siesta under umbrella. Late afternoon: Chrissopigi for light, then Faros dinner. Return Apollonia after dark on a route you already know. Not the day to explore gravel shortcuts.

This loop assumes a compact from Artemis with no prepayment enquiry and fuel topped near Kamares or Apollonia at least once. Scooter couples can run a shorter version skipping Platis Gialos parking stress by eating in Faros instead.

Pair beaches with your stay choice
