Which rental car suits Sifnos roads? A model-by-model guide

Bigger is not better on Sifnos. The island's roads are sealed but narrow, village streets are tight, and the best parking spots at the beaches go to whoever fits. At the same time, a car that is too small for your luggage makes the ferry day miserable. Here is how we would match our own fleet to your trip, after many summers of watching what works.

Three questions first

  1. How many of you, and how much luggage? Ferry bags take more space than people expect. Count suitcases, not just seats.
  2. Manual or automatic? Every beach day ends with a climb back up to the central ridge. If you do not drive a manual every week at home, take an automatic.
  3. When are you travelling? Automatics are the first cars to go in July and August.

Small manuals: the Sifnos sweet spot

Chevrolet Spark51.0€40€65
Hyundai i1051.2€40€70
Fiat Panda51.2€45€75
Nissan Micra51.2€45€75

These are the cars we would choose for two people. They slip into tight spaces in Apollonia and at the beaches, turn easily in village lanes, and cost the least. The Fiat Panda is a good all-rounder: tall and boxy, so it is easy to see out of and swallows more beach gear than its size suggests. The Spark and i10 are the cheapest; with two people and soft bags they are fine, with three adults and suitcases they are tight.

Good for: couples, solo travellers, anyone travelling light, budget trips.

Comfortable compacts: a little more room

Peugeot 20851.2€50€80
Skoda Fabia51.0€55€85
Citroën C35n/a€55€85

A step up in comfort and boot space while staying small enough for the island. The Skoda Fabia and Citroën C3 are our usual suggestion for a family of four with soft bags, or two couples sharing a car for a few days.

Good for: families with young children, longer stays, two couples.

The Peugeot 301: most luggage

Peugeot 30151.2€55€85

The 301 is a saloon with a separate boot, the most practical choice when you arrive with large suitcases. It is longer than the hatchbacks, so plan a little more carefully in Kastro and in the narrow streets of Apollonia, but on the main roads it is relaxed and roomy.

Good for: families with hard suitcases, groups of four adults.

Suzuki Ignis: four seats, sitting higher

Suzuki Ignis41.2€50€85

The Ignis has a raised driving position, which many people like on winding roads and on the rougher last stretches to a few coves. It has four seats, not five, and a modest boot, so it suits a couple who want a little extra height rather than a family.

Good for: couples, drivers who like to sit higher.

Automatics

Nissan Micra Auto51.2€50€70€85
Peugeot 208 Auto51.2€60€80€100

If you are not completely at ease with hill starts, an automatic takes the stress out of Sifnos. The climbs from Kamares, Vathi and Platys Gialos back up to Apollonia are long, and hairpins with oncoming traffic are easier without a clutch. The Micra Auto is the better value; the 208 Auto is the more comfortable ride.

Automatics are always the first cars to go in July and August. If you need one, enquire as soon as your ferry is booked.

Good for: automatic-only drivers, anyone nervous about hills.
