Driving in Sifnos: roads, parking, and local tips

Sifnos is small enough to cross in under an hour and interesting enough that you will want to stop every twenty minutes. Driving here is not difficult, but it is not mainland motorway driving either. Narrow asphalt, occasional gravel stretches, and goats that treat the verge as a footpath all belong to the experience.

Road character across the island

The main coastal loop connects Kamares, Apollonia, Platis Gialos, and Faros with generally good tarmac. Inland routes to Vathi, Exambela, and Kastro climb steadily, manual drivers should stay in second gear on the steepest sections; automatic renters will appreciate the extra torque of a slightly larger engine.

Village centres like Apollonia and Artemonas have one-way systems and tight corners. Park at the designated edges and walk in. Do not attempt to thread a car through pedestrian lanes in Kastro, park below the settlement and climb on foot.

Night driving

First evening after a ferry arrival, keep driving minimal. Street lighting is sparse outside Kamares and Apollonia, and unmarked junctions appear where farm tracks meet the main road. Artemis recommends settling in, then starting full island loops the next morning.

Parking at beaches and villages

Peak August at Platis Gialos, Vathi, and Chrissopigi rewards early arrivals. Aim for before 10 a.m. on hot weeks, or accept a short walk from an overflow spot. Faros and Herronisos have smaller lots that fill quickly on weekend evenings when locals drive in for fish tavernas.

Apollonia parking near the Artemis office is practical for overnight stays in the capital. You can collect your car in the morning and return keys there at the end of your rental. Kamares has port-side spaces that work well if your hotel is walking distance from the ferry.

Fuel, returns, and rental logistics

Petrol stations are limited, fill up before a long south-coast day if your gauge is below half. Artemis explains return expectations when you collect the vehicle: same fuel level, no rush on the final morning if your ferry is late afternoon. No prepayment is required when you enquire; pickup defaults to Apollonia, with Kamares on request for ferry arrivals.
