Car or scooter on Sifnos? An honest comparison
4 min read · 2026-11-03 · Artemis Rental
We rent both, so we have no reason to push you one way. After decades of watching guests come back from beach days on Sifnos, the pattern is clear: a scooter is wonderful for the right people on the right days, and a car is the safer default for almost everyone else.
The quick decision
| Your situation | Our suggestion |
|---|---|
| You only have a car licence | Car. A car licence does not cover a 125cc scooter in Greece. |
| Three or more people | Car |
| Children, or a child seat | Car |
| Ferry luggage and no hotel transfer | Car (free pickup at the port) |
| July or August, exposed beaches in the north | Car |
| Two people, light bags, motorcycle licence, settled weather | Scooter works well |
| You want to park right by the beach in August | Scooter is easier to park |
| You want to collect at the ferry | Car (scooters are Apollonia office only) |
Licence: the deciding factor for many
This rules out more scooter plans than anything else. Our scooters are 125cc to 200cc, and in Greece those need a motorcycle licence, category A1 or higher. A car licence is not enough, even if it lets you ride a 125 at home. If you have the right licence, read the scooter licence rules for the detail on non-EU licences.
Luggage and the ferry
Every visitor arrives at Kamares port with bags. With a car, we meet the ferry: the car is waiting at the quay at no extra charge, and you drive straight to your hotel. A scooter has to be collected at our Apollonia office, about 5.5 km uphill, so you first need a bus, a taxi or a hotel transfer.
Wind, heat and hills
Sifnos sits on a ridge. Apollonia is high in the middle, every beach is down at sea level, and every beach day ends with a climb back up. On a 125cc with two people and beach bags, that climb is slow.
From mid-July through August the meltemi, a strong northerly wind, blows across the island on many afternoons. On exposed stretches, especially the long road north to Cherronisos, crosswinds on two wheels are tiring and occasionally unnerving. In a car it is a non-event, and you can simply drive to a sheltered bay like Vathi.
The sun matters too. At 2 p.m. in August, a car with air conditioning and a parasol in the boot is a very different experience from a scooter seat that has been parked in the sun.
Parking
Here the scooter wins. In August, Platys Gialos, Vathi and Chrysopigi fill up by late morning, and a scooter slips into spaces a car never could. In Apollonia and Kastro, where cars park at the edge and walk in, a scooter gets you a little closer.
With a car, the answer is timing: arrive before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Our driving guide has parking notes for each village and beach.
Cost
| Low | Shoulder | Mid | Peak | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cheapest car (Chevrolet Spark) | €40 | €45 | €50 | €65 |
| Scooter (125cc to 200cc) | n/a | n/a | €30 to €35 | €35 to €40 |
Compared with the cheapest car, a scooter saves roughly €15 to €30 a day in summer. A car carries up to five, so for a family or a group of friends it is cheaper per person. Published scooter rates only cover 11 June to 10 September; outside those dates, a small manual car is the budget option. Full tables are on the rates page.
Safety, plainly
Island roads are narrow, winding and often have no barrier. Gravel collects at the edge of beach roads. Nobody needs to be nervous, but a scooter forgives fewer mistakes than a car. If you have not ridden for years, Sifnos in August is not the place to start again. Helmets are included with every scooter, and they go on for every ride.
Our honest recommendation
- Most visitors: a small car. Free port pickup, luggage space, shade, and no worries about wind.
- Couples with a motorcycle licence who ride regularly at home: a scooter for a few days in settled weather is a lovely way to see the island.
- Not sure? Book the car. You will not regret having a roof on a windy afternoon.
