Sifnos beaches worth the drive

Sifnos beaches worth the drive

With an Artemis car or scooter, prioritise Platis Gialos for facilities, Vathi for a sheltered bay, Chrysopigi for the monastery postcard, and Herronisos or Vroulidia when you want quieter north-coast swimming. Arrive early in July–August for parking.

Sifnos beaches are spread around a compact island, short distances on the map, but much easier with your own wheels than with sparse summer buses. This guide is written for travellers who pick up keys in Apollonia (or Kamares on request) and want clear answers: which beach, how to get there, where to park, and what the wind usually does.

Platis Gialos beach Sifnos
Platis Gialos, long sandy beach on southern Sifnos

How to choose a beach day

  • Families & facilities: Platis Gialos or Kamares
  • Sheltered swimming: Vathi (excellent wind protection)
  • Photos & monastery: Chrysopigi (combine with Faros)
  • Quiet north coast: Herronisos + Vroulidia (car strongly preferred)
  • Hike or boat only: Fykiada (no road)

Summer tip: leave Apollonia by 09:30, or visit a second beach after 16:00 when day-trippers leave.

Platis Gialos

Southern Sifnos · ~15–20 minutes from Apollonia by car

One of the largest and most popular sandy beaches on Sifnos, especially loved by Greek visitors. It regularly earns Blue Flag recognition for water quality and services. Expect tavernas, beach bars, water sports in season, shops, and pottery studios nearby.

Highlights

  • Blue Flag sandy shoreline
  • Views toward Kitriani islet
  • Easy base for southern coastal drives
  • Nearby White Tower (ancient beacon) walks

Access & parking: Paved road from Apollonia; bus in season. Parking fills near the sand by late morning in peak weeks, use side streets and walk a few minutes.

Wind: Moderate, better protected from harsh northerlies than open north coves.

Perfect for: Families, swimming, long lunch days, travellers with beach gear in the boot.

Kamares beach and port
Kamares, port bay and beach on western Sifnos

Kamares

Western Sifnos (main port) · ~10–15 minutes from Apollonia

The ferry harbour and largest coastal village. Wide sandy bay, lots of services, and the practical first or last swim of your trip. Artemis can arrange Kamares pickup for cars when the boat docks, ask when you enquire.

Highlights

  • Main ferry arrival / departure
  • Trailheads toward Nymfon and coastal caves
  • Groceries, bakeries, pottery workshops
  • Beach + logistics in one place

Access & parking: Straight road from Apollonia. Port traffic peaks when ferries dock, allow extra minutes then.

Wind: Good, protected bay for most conditions.

Perfect for: Arrival day swims, families, travellers staying near the port.

Vathi bay Sifnos
Vathi, sheltered sandy bay

Vathi

Western Sifnos · ~20–25 minutes from Apollonia

A photogenic, wide sandy bay with a calmer village feel. Once a major pottery centre, Vathi still rewards a slow lunch and an afternoon swim. Excellent shelter when the meltemi is up.

Highlights

  • Sheltered swimming
  • Pottery heritage and studios
  • Trails linking toward Platis Gialos / Fykiada
  • Soft sand and a classic Cycladic amphitheatre shape

Access & parking: Road access with village parking; arrive before lunch in August.

Wind: Excellent, one of the most sheltered beaches on the island.

Perfect for: Couples, scooter day trips (light bags), windy Afternoons when other coves are choppy.

Chrysopigi monastery Sifnos
Chrysopigi, monastery on the rocky headland

Chrysopigi

Southeastern Sifnos · ~20 minutes from Apollonia

The island’s most photographed headland: the Monastery of Panagia Chrysopigi (16th century), patron saint of Sifnos, above rocky swim spots and clear water. Come for the setting more than for a long sandy lounge.

Highlights

  • Iconic monastery and festival days
  • Snorkelling around rocks
  • Combine with Faros or Platis Gialos in one loop
  • Sunset light on the peninsula

Access & parking: Drive via Faros / southern roads; parking is limited near the monastery, do not block chapel access. Bus to Faros + walk is possible but slower with beach bags.

Wind: Moderate, which side of the headland feels calmer changes with the forecast.

Perfect for: Photography, short swims, cultural stops between beach days.

Faros fishing village beach
Faros, fishing village beaches

Faros

Southeastern Sifnos · ~15 minutes from Apollonia

A traditional fishing village that once served as the island’s main port. Small beaches, tavernas, and coastal walks (including toward Fasolou / Stavros) make it a gentle half-day.

Highlights

  • Fishing-village atmosphere
  • Coastal footpaths
  • Easy pair with Chrysopigi
  • Trail links toward Agios Andreas / Kastro for hikers

Access & parking: Paved road; modest parking near the waterfront.

Wind: Good, sheltered pocket.

Perfect for: Relaxed swimming, lunch stops, travellers who dislike big resort beaches.

Herronisos northern Sifnos
Herronisos, northern fishing cove

Herronisos (Heronissos)

Northern Sifnos · ~30–35 minutes from Apollonia

The northernmost beach village, small, traditional, with pottery and a quiet cove. This is where a rental car earns its keep: buses are infrequent and the road is longer.

Highlights

  • End-of-the-road seclusion
  • Traditional pottery
  • Fishing-village scale
  • Pair with Vroulidia the same afternoon

Access & parking: Best by car; limited parking in the village lane, reverse carefully.

Wind: Moderate, more exposed to northerlies than Vathi.

Perfect for: Seclusion, craft stops, travellers with a full day and fuel.

Vroulidia pebble beach
Vroulidia, pebble beach near Herronisos

Vroulidia

Northern Sifnos · near Herronisos

A tranquil pebble beach with clear water and a more rugged feel. Small seaside cafés may offer umbrellas in season. Final approach can include a short downhill walk from limited roadside parking.

Access: Dirt / rough approach in places, take it slow in a compact car; scooters need care on loose surfaces.

Wind: Can feel exposed when southerlies blow.

Perfect for: Snorkelling, quiet afternoons, travellers who already visited the big southern beaches.

Fykiada secluded beach
Fykiada, hike-or-boat beach

Fykiada

Between Platis Gialos and Vathi · no road

Completely undeveloped sand, reachable only on foot or by boat. Near the chapel of Agios Georgios and an ancient olive tree. Leave the car in Platis Gialos or Vathi and hike; carry water and leave no rubbish.

Perfect for: Hikers, adventure swims, crowd-free mornings.

Suggested driving loops

  1. South loop (half day): Apollonia → Faros → Chrysopigi → Platis Gialos → return
  2. West calm day: Apollonia → Vathi (long swim) → optional sunset in Apollonia
  3. North explorer (full day): Apollonia → Herronisos → Vroulidia → return via Artemonas for dinner
  4. Port day: Morning ferry coffee in Kamares + beach, then inland
